The need to do something is often counter-productive when action is taken in response to some dramatic event. Sometimes a tragedy is just a tragedy, not the spark for a preventative crusade.

Matt,
Great post. As I read it, I couldn't help but think of all the other times people want to Do Something, as you say, in response to some wrong. But really, most people want Somebody Else to assume responsibility -- like an ignition breathalyzer or a law enforcement officer. Not enough people want to take personal responsibility for stopping someone they know from driving who shouldn't be driving. Gallo, for example, was only 22 -- technically an adult. At that tender age he already had a DUI conviction and a suspended license. Wouldn't his friends or family know that he shouldn't be driving? Did they notice if he still had a car? Unless he got drunk at home and stole someone's car, wouldn't someone notice that he was s**t-faced and shouldn't be anywhere near a parking lot?

There is much to be said for shared public commitments. But it really has to become a part of a culture. And a certain amount of leadership matters. I don't watch many TV shows but I'm hooked on Celeb Apprentice. Donald Trump fired Chloe Kardashian because she skipped some of the show to handle her DUI in LA. Seemed harsh and unfair within the game, but it was a public shaming. And if peers/culture works better than laws, then Trump did the right thing.

Matt, I heard about this on ESPN today. Your analysis is truly the type of commentary that wraps it all up and puts it in perspective. Thank you for shedding light on MADD.
