‘Is this what will happen when Islam takes over the United States?’

Sharia in the US” is a well-circulating YouTube video from David Wood and Nabeel Qureshi. Clocking in at exactly 10 minutes, it’s a Michael Moore-style “report” documenting a Christian group’s failed attempt to infiltrate a Muslim-oriented festival in Dearborn, Mich. I’ll post the video after the jump, with the addendum that, while it’s worth watching in its entirety, you can gather pretty much all you need to gather from its last three minutes. If you’re really pressed for time, watch only the last minute:

To reiterate, the video’s final point is this:

We ask you, is it a coincidence that the city with the highest percentage of Muslims in the United States is the city where Christianity is not allowed to be represented (let alone preached) on a public sidewalk? Is it coincidence that in this city, people will say “No way!” when we say “This is the United States of America”? Is this what will happen when Islam takes over the United States?

Now. I vehemently dislike the idea that anyone should be denied the right to film or otherwise record an interview — especially during a public event (as it seems Dearborn’s Arab Festival intends to be). And while it does, in fact, seem unfair that these people were turned away from the supposedly public Arab Festival because they supposedly wanted to assault question-seeking Muslims with answer-seeking Christian queries, Wood and Qureshi come to odd conclusions: First, that their video rejection means “Islam [will take] over the United States,” but also that this kind of repressive response to video documentation is somehow Muslim-specific. I don’t fully understand what their first conclusion intends to imply, really, but, in response to the latter, I wonder if Wood and Qureshi have ever been to a US political gathering of any type. I’ll point out the “Don’t Taze Me, Bro” fiasco as just one of many non-Muslim examples of well-documented oppression. And if they’d like more, perhaps they should look into President George W. Bush’s “Free Speech Zones.”

I don’t know. Maybe I’m looking at this too narrowly. In your opinion, what does this video intend to accomplish?

  1. collapse expand

i don’t know that i have a problem with the people in the tent not wanting to be filmed given what has happened to arabic people in this country since 9/11. dearborn especially bore the brunt of what could be considered selective prosecution. their sign said they would answer questions but that is not the same as consenting to have your likeness taken and who knows what done with it. on the other hand it was a complete over reaction by the “security” detail ( i work security at functions just like that ) and i can promise you i would have had it handled faster and quieter than those guys.

    What I'm Up To

    About The Prison Dilemma

The Prison Dilemma is about incarceration, justice, prisons, and prison reform. If you’re interested in any of these things, and your thirst for information isn’t fundamentally and in all ways quenched by the information you find here, I recommend that you explore volunteer opportunities with your local Innocence Project. If you’re like me and you live within 100 miles of Pittsburgh, PA, the Innocence Institute of Point Park University is your best option. That’s where I work.

I also work as a staff writer with Trib Total Media.
