Running On Empty: Imagining L.A. Without People, Automobiles, and Traffic
If you’ve ever worked a nightshift job, and were arriving home just as most other people were rolling out of bed, then the scenes from Ross Ching’s “Running on Empty” will appear familiar. Inspired by Matt Logue’s Empty LA, Ching’s short film does a good job of setting the scene for those peaceful moments of public solitude. Especially in a city like Los Angeles, which boasts a population of over 9 million residents, looking at familiar sights devoid of human and automobile traffic is surreal. But perhaps that’s the point of both Logue’s initial work, and Ching’s remix.

Mr. Newton,
Well that was indeed pleasant, not just for the reasons you mentioned (I have worked graveyard shift a few times in Los Angeles) but also because he avoided using only stereotyped images of Los Angeles. He showed several of my favorite bridges and the walls along Monterey Road into Hermon are wonderful. There are many Los Angeles’ and usually only a few get any attention. This was nice that a few of the others got some screen time.

I agree David, I like that we’re not seeing the usual landmarks, like a shot of the Capitol Records building or images of a deserted Sunset Strip. Thanks for these links too.
