‘Glee’ goes GaGa for naught

Dear “Glee” executive producer and creator Ryan Murphy:

You have a Broadway talent like Idina Menzel on your show and you make her sing an acoustic version of a fucking Lady GaGa song?

You owe me money.

Sincerely,

matthew

The whole Lady Gaga thing fell flat for me, too. I think this show is strongest when it sticks to its Broadway roots. It’s fun to throw in a few pop classics to keep the younger set entertained, but I think the operative word is “classic”. Lady Gaga doesn’t yet qualify, if she ever will.

Meh – i think it’s funny how seriously people take “Glee.” It certainly doesn’t take itself too seriously. Yes, there are some real issues that high schoolers and adults face presented on the program, but the plot holes are far and wide. 1 ex? Curt joins football team, then cheerios, then dresses like Lady Gaga. Only that last thing brings about the ire of football players? whatever.

For the record, I like “Glee.” There’s that suspension of reality every thin they break into song; even Rachel mentioned that Ed is just always around. Some of the content included is spot-on for young adults, and I think the musical-style presentation is what makes it so palatable for so many people. Still – taking it seriously is folly. There are bigger issues in the real world.

    About Me

I left journalism school with one goal in mind: to work at TV Guide. It didn't happen. So, I stuck with my day-job: retyping entertainment listings into the Prodigy computer service for The Los Angeles Times. Dial-up modems got faster and I stuck with the Web -- launching, editing and innovating national, political and feature news Web sites for ABC News, The Washington Post and AOL. I've spent 15 years making other people's content look good on computer screens. It's time the shoe finally landed on the other foot...
