Thanks for your thoughts. I used to love the Food Network because it would inspire me to try new things in the kitchen — and, I’ll admit, I found the sounds and rhythms of its cooking shows very soothing. But it’s all noise now.

And I love your analogy comparing it to MTV. I might steal that

Food Network is to food what MTV is to music. MTV used to play music, now they’re entertainment ABOUT music. Food Network isn’t teaching anyone to cook, they’re entertainment about food. Shame.

As a culinary instructor, I’ve been frustrated by people’s reliance on the celebrity written recipe to learn to cook. Entertainment food shows and written recipes don’t teach you to cook any more than sheet music teaches you HOW to play piano.

Food Network could do a greater service by teaching people what to do with wholesome ingredients, rather than glorifying the abundance of questionable food sources that yield health and nutrition problems. They’re disappointing in that regard.
