Boston’s WHDH Backs Down, Will Air Leno Show

Jay Leno

In a shocking, startling, completely unexpected, totally unsurprising announcement, Boston’s rogue NBC affiliate, WHDH, has had second thoughts about not airing Jay Leno’s new 10 p.m. talk show in the fall.

“Upon further consideration, we have decided to telecast Jay Leno at 10:00 p.m. starting in September,’’ said Ed Ansin, owner of WHDH and WLVI-TV Channel 56, in a statement. “Jay is from Andover, where I went to school. I enjoy his humor. We hope the new show is a big success.” (via Channel 7: We’ll air Leno’s new show – Daily Business Update – The Boston Globe)

Why does that completely natural-sounding statement remind me of the old Jon Lovitz skit from “SNL:” “I loved it. It was better than ‘Cats.’ I’m going to see it again and again…’?

Keep an eye out for more details in the next few days about why WHDH backed down…

So, I stuck with my day-job: retyping entertainment listings into the Prodigy computer service for The Los Angeles Times. Dial-up modems got faster and I stuck with the Web -- launching, editing and innovating national, political and feature news Web sites for ABC News, The Washington Post and AOL. I've spent 15 years making other people's content look good on computer screens. It's time the shoe finally landed on the other foot...
