Are the BMW Bandits Radical Sarah Silverman Fans?

I have no idea why this story is such big news around L.A., but the local media has taken to covering a team of thieves who make their livings stealing airbags and headlights from BMW’s. The media-branded “BMW Bandits” have hit at least 54 cars on the Westside. And to this I say GOOD!

Every time I see something about this story I’m reminded of Sarah Silverman’s hilarious song about Jewish people driving German cars.

“Jewish people driving German cars: it’s the opposite of FUBU.”

I’m holding out hope the BMW Bandits are angry Hebrew pranksters taking Silverman’s words to heart. This isn’t a criminal ring intent on selling parts on the black market. No, this is a group of identity driven Jewish nationalists trying to inspire a massive guilt trip amongst their brethren on the heavily Jewish Westside.

Well, probably not…But a leftist Jew can dream can’t I? I can dream that this is a harbinger of a return to Jewish radicalism — that the BMW Bandits are the beginning of a radical Jewish underground. No more sellout Neocons * cough* Bill Kristol *cough* Oh, what a lovely dream.

About Me

'Nobody walks in Los Angeles' you may have heard or read or said to yourself absentmindedly. This is entirely untrue. Plenty of crackheads walk in Los Angeles. Any number of schizophrenics too. And so do I. I'm a journalist who came up through the alternative weekly world, first as a staff writer with the LA Weekly and then as a senior editor of the LA City Beat. I currently write for the Los Angeles Times Magazine among other publications. When I'm not writing I wander, usually by foot.
