And You Thought the L.A. Wildfires Were Bad

Check out this graphic from the University of Maryland’s Fire Information For Resource Management System. The red and orange spots indicate fires.

The L.A. fires are just a speck. Meanwhile, roughly a third of Africa seems to be on fire. The Amazon doesn’t seem to be faring much better. This isn’t all that surprising, as news of migrant farmers slashing and burning the rainforest in the pursuit of arable farmland isn’t exactly breaking. What is surprising is how much of Europe is currently being torched. Greece’s battle with wildfires outside of Athens has drawn media scrutiny for the second straight year, but who knew the areas surrounding Kiev and Moscow were blazing?

    About Me

'Nobody walks in Los Angeles' you may have heard or read or said to yourself absentmindedly. This is entirely untrue. Plenty of crackheads walk in Los Angeles. Any number of schizophrenics too. And so do I. I'm a journalist who came up through the alternative weekly world, first as a staff writer with the LA Weekly and then as a senior editor of the LA City Beat. I currently write for the Los Angeles Times Magazine among other publications. When I'm not writing I wander, usually by foot.
