Obama Cuts Border Fence Funding

President Obama has wisely decided not to extend the 340-mile border fence. As just about everyone knows, the fence has proven to be yet another wasted expenditure heartily endorsed by the Bush administration. From the Wall Street Journal:

…Drug smugglers and illegal immigrants continue to breach the fencing that is up, forcing Border Patrol agents and contractors to return again and again for repairs. The smugglers build ramps to drive over fencing, dig tunnels under it, or use blow torches to slice through. They cut down metal posts used as vehicle barriers and replace them with dummy posts, made from cardboard.

As Obama’s own director of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano once said: “You build a 50-foot wall, somebody will find a 51-foot ladder.”

* UPDATE: The $6.7 billion virtual fence is still going up, though, after years of delays.
