Another Reporter Is Murdered
Carlos Ortega Samper, a journalist with a small paper in the northern state of Durango, was shot dead over the weekend, after he published a story elucidating threats from the town mayor and two other officials. He was reportedly pulled from his car and shot three times at point blank. His editor said he thought he’d been killed for writing about crooked local officials. The Committee to Protect Journalists has the details.
Mexico is one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists. According to CPJ, at least 25 have been killed and seven disappeared since 2000. In April, the lower house approved a measure to make crimes against reporters a federal offense, but it hasn’t moved through the Senate yet. More on that here.
