Farewell True/Slant, we barely knew thee
So I suppose this will be my last post on True/Slant. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending I suppose on your view of my writing, I don’t have the time to do a long-winded and dramatic goodbye. Please know, though, that I greatly enjoyed my time here, particularly the chance to interact with a very lively group of commentors and some of the oustanding contributors that this site attracted. Also Charles Johnson called me a sexually dysfunctional anti-Semite, which was pretty funny.
But do not despair, fair intertubes! I shall be making a return at some point in the near future, once I’ve finished contract negotiations with the FSB. Right now we’re in an extended holdout over my demand that I be given a province of my own. I’m still trying to get either Pskov or Leningrad but those selfish jerks keep trying to dump Vologda on me, which they helpfully describe as “a real challenge.”
I will hopefully see you all sometime in September, and in the meantime you can follow me on Twitter where I will no doubt continue to make announcements of great importance.

It’s very sad news, Mark. I really enjoyed reading and commenting on your posts, as well as I got to know some very interesting people here. I sincerely hope that you’ll continue your blogging about Russia, for your insight’s been acknowledged by many people, both Russians, and foreigners.
I think that Twitter is the Devil’s invention and a clear sign of the coming Apocalypse, so I ask you to write me something on my gmail account (username is the same as here) so I could stay in touch with you.

Yes, I too am very sad to see you go, Mark. I enjoyed reading your blogs, and I will miss the stimulating discussions. It was my only outlet for political discourse, since my family is not interested, and I work with a bunch of anti-intellectual barbarians (computer programmers, I am talking about, of course).

I am sad that you are leaving T/S. Although I have not agreed with you on a number of issues(eg you were thoroughly against neo-conservatism[I think they were right in some and wrong in many things], Islam, Israel etc.), I do enjoy your perspectives on Russia which were very insightful. I can say we will miss you(including your ‘opponents’). Hope to see you in September. All the best in all your undertakings!

Итак.
Если коротко, статья Марка сводится к двум тезисам:
1. Западные массмедиа вообще и американские в частности всегда лгали, лгут и будут лгать во всём, что касается России. Вне зависимости от того, права в данном случае Россия, или не права. Самый наглядный пример — война с Грузией.
2. Если российские власти действительно нуждаются в западных инвестициях и технологиях, то они должны действовать с оглядкой на западные массмедиа.
Марк, я был бы очень признателен, если бы ты объяснил, где здесь логика?
Какой смысл обращать внимание на то, что завтра напишут о России в WSJ, NYT или WP, если они В ЛЮБОМ СЛУЧАЕ (правы мы или не правы) разразятся очередной статьей про “Империю Зла” (тм). Как гениально сказала моя экс-экс-экс гёрлфренд: “Не спорь со мной! Ты все равно не прав!”.
Ну и какая разница что именно они будут клеймить на этот раз — реальную ошибку российских властей или выдуманную на пустом месте?
А что касается наивных и пугливых инвесторов, которых может запугать какой-нибудь бред, услышанный ими вечером на FoxNews…
Позволь напомнить тебе лишь одно имя: Bill Browder, портфельный инвестор, глава Hermitage Capital Management. Тот самый, что долгие годы был чуть не главным адвокатом “путинского режима” (пока этот режим позволял ему иметь сверхприбыли в России), а потом мгновенно превратился в чуть не главного “критика Кремля” (по чистой случайности — сразу после того, как российские налоговые органы намекнули ему, что неплохо бы хотя бы слегка соблюдать местные законы

Инвесторам глубоко насрать на все статьи в WSJ, NYT или WP, равно как на все передачи CNN и FoxNews вместе взятые. Они вкладывали, вкладывают и будут вкладывать туда и только туда, где можно получить прибыль. И чем больше прибыль, тем более радостно будут вкладывать. И неважно, Китай это, Нигерия, или Россия. И неважно, как в этой стране поступают с политзаключёнными — гуманно расстреливают, или едят живьём на завтрак

ИМХО, вопрос в том, каких людей с Запада мы хотим привлекать в Россию: отбросы общества, или достойных людей. ИМХО, нам действительно на фиг не нужны инвесторы, которые гонятся исключительно за прибылью, занимаются краткосрочными инвестициями или же хотят присосаться к российским природным ресурсам. Зачем оно нужно, если в стране и так есть избыток денег? На депозитах Сбербанка граждане хранят 3.4 триллиона рублей — что, Сбер не может их проинвестировать в выгодные активы?
Насколько я понимаю, смысл в привлечении инвесторов в том, чтобы к нам приходили люди, способные создавать новые высокотехнологичные производства. Наличие спецов — недостаточно. Необходимы люди, которых называют project manager, а так же необходимы инвесторы, которые обеспечивают всю эту музыку деньгами.
Ну и если вопрос ставится так, что нам неплохо было бы привлечь энное количество достойных, ответственных и квалифицированных западных инвесторов, то нужно в какой-то мере пересмотреть и подходы страны в отношении ведения бизнеса, в отношении PR, т.д. Страна сама должна соответствовать тому уровню людей, которых мы хотели бы привлекать. Иначе к нам будут приходить только отбросы, гоняющиеся за легкой прибылью.

Needless to say, it’s deceiving and aggressive as well. The West however was the mid-wife during the birth of this monster, way back in the nineties ( US to be precise.)
So your skepticism regarding Western society and its motives is rather refreshing.

It makes no sense to figure out any absolute reasoning and impose them on the others. There’s no truth but the one you have found for yourselves, and that works for every person in the unique way. Try to enjoy the life, and let other people do the same.

I really liked your last InoSmi article. It proves that you know your Russian audience and can broadcast your message to it in a suitable manner. Really well done. As I commented, I also like the specific rhetorics you used. You know, there is an old Soviet cliche that the country must know its heroes. Unfortunately, it works both ways, and the country must know its anti-heroes likewise.
Really a good piece.
