Jon & Kate & TLC: Countdown CLOCK to the end of the road
Here’s one for the “Are you ****ing kidding me?” file.
In anticipation of tonight’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 series finale (admit it — you’re setting your DVR in anticipation of the trainwreck, complete with the knowledge that relief will soon be at hand — there’s a literal party going on over at Gosselins Without Pity), daytime on TLC today is of course filled with show reruns.
That makes sense to me. What’s nothing short of appalling is the COUNTDOWN CLOCK in the lower-right corner that’s counting — literally — the seconds until the final episode tonight.
Come on. It was tacky when CNN introduced it during President Clinton’s Lewinsky deposition, but at least there was something of a justification for it. I find it weird when it’s employed now just as a countdown to a presidential speech on any number of networks. But this, even with a high tolerance for nausea, is more than just a bit much.
Way to stretch every last marketing dollar as far as possible, TLC. On the bright side, we’re just hours away from this long national nightmare being over. Or something.
After all of this, if the Mythbusters guys break up, I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do.

As you suggest, I choose to think of it this way: TLC is counting down to the time till this cute little show-turned-gawdawful spectacle is out of our lives (at least in this form). It’s like a public service, almost.
I wonder if you came upon the countdown clock the same way I did — watching midday “What Not to Wear” reruns.
