On tonight’s “Late Show,” David Letterman ‘fessed up that he’s the victim of an extortion attempt.

The 62-year-old funnyman said he received a package three weeks ago from a person who claimed to have information about Letterman’s sexual dalliances, ultimately demanding $2 million to prevent public revelation.

Letterman said he went to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which conducted an investigation, and an arrest was made earlier Thursday.

Oh, Dave.  Of all the celebrity sex lives that interest me — and there are many — yours isn’t one.  And you’d think after the foiled plot to kidnap your son four years ago, the sad story of your stalker and the way the Connecticut State Police used to lay in wait to pull you over, you’d be a little more in tune with the idea that you’re a target.  But hey, wait to get out in front of the story.

Also:

Revelation came on what should have been a day of celebration for Letterman, as ratings from week one of the new TV season gave the host his first outright latenight victory in four years.

    About Me

I've always been obsessed with pop culture and celebrity, even as a political reporter by day at washingtonpost.com and ABC News. Even after leaving journalism for media relations and consulting (Need help with press releases, brochures, annual reports, or media strategy? E-mail me -- lisa.celebjungleATgmail.com.), I pretended to be mildly appalled by the antics of the beautiful and famous -- then gobbled up tabloids and all the gossip I could find. To date, I've preserved my amateur status as a celebrity news analyst so I could compete in the gossip Olympics, but now I've decided to go pro. As a recent transplant to Los Angeles, or Celebrity Ground Zero, I'm learning to live among them as they roam unfettered over the landscape -- while praying that a behind-the-wheel Lindsay Lohan stays out of my neighborhood.
