What If? (A beautiful and poignant liberal fantasy)

American radio host Rachel Maddow.

The Birther Movement!

Death panels!

Indoctrinating schoolchildren into socialism!

The far-fetched, hysterical behavior on the right since the rise of Obama has been so extreme, I can’t help wondering: What on earth would it be like if a liberal had been elected?

The weirdest thing about The Great Conservative Psychosis is that it comes in response to a President who is by any rational measure a moderate and pragmatist, substantially to the right of his progressive base.

Imagine if in his first 100 days, Obama had proposed single-payer health insurance, immediately shut down Guantanamo, began to implement a quick withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, issued an executive order allowing gays in the military, instituted a crackdown on Wall Street shenanigans along with the bail-outs and a major investigation of Bush, Cheney, et al for war crimes?

A laundry list to gladden the hearts of many liberals, I daresay. Maybe most.

The right wing would have had to invent an entirely new vocabulary to deal with this development. Even the over-the-top epithets in current use–Socialist, Communist, Nazi, etc.–wouldn’t suffice. What would they say? Coprophagous anarchist baby raper? Maoist corpse sucker?

And what would they do? Their poor minds would boggle. Maybe the righties would’ve barricaded themselves in their homes with their plentiful supplies of weaponry and started shooting at anything that moved. Or emigrated to New Zealand. Or gathered in mighty herds and jogged over the nearest cliff.

You figure it would have to be something seriously apocalyptic.

But maybe not. Maybe they would be so stunned and disheartened, they’d just withdraw into apathy and sullen despair, punctuated by occasional fits of weeping, or avail themselves of massive amounts of alcohol and/or narcotics.

It’s a lovely dream, imagining the Becks, the Limbaughs, the Cheneys, the Palins, the Bachmanns, the tea partiers, the town hall disrupters, the whole loony crew, trying to cope with a President Nader or Kucinich or Sanders or Maddow…or a President Obama who went at the Republicans the way FDR or Truman used to.

Now that would be a crackup to really crack you up.

A beautiful dream that I hope comes true one day!

This would be amazing to see.
But you also raise a valid political point here. Are the Republicans fighting Obama so hard because they know they can? Do bullies pick on the kids who stand up to them? No, they knock the geek’s glasses off, take the lunch out of his Green Lantern lunchbox, and step on his pocket protector, just like they did last week.

I love the bully analogy. So true!!!

And…a little off topic.. As a straight, married woman, if I were to have a dream of a sexual nature about Rachel Maddow… that means I still love my husband, right?

    Just a random hypothetical question…

I don’t know if Rachel reads True/Slant, but I think she’d love this.

    About Me

Once I was a writer for the Old Media. But the Old Media went away and now I am a content provider for the New Media. That doesn’t necessarily mean I am more content or better provided for, only that times change.

I used to call this page ETAOIN SHRDLU but too many people asked me what ETAOIN SHRDLU meant and when I told them, they usually replied, “Who gives a fuck?” So now I’m calling it GROSSBLOGGER. As a result, some people now think my name is Lewis Grossblogger. I’m thinking of having it legally changed, just to end the confusion.

The subject I specialize in is: Everything in the Universe. I seldom write about anything outside of that. Why did I choose that topic? Well, first, because it’s my area of expertise and second, because I noticed that no one else was covering the beat.

So if you’re ever wondering what’s going on anywhere in or around the universe, this is the place to come for answers. Some of the answers may be wrong, but that’s not my fault; it’s Wikipedia’s. That’s where I get most of my information. Also I make up stuff, but a lot of it comes true later so if you’re concerned about accuracy, just wait.

Read me, follow me, bookmark me, e-mail me to all your friends and relatives and you will live a long and happy life. This is a scientific fact. I guarantee it.
