False bomb scare causes JFK Airport terminal evacuation

Update 2: 4chan behind Sunday night bomb scare? I’m skeptical…

Update: False alarm, airport authorities report via AP

Terminal 1 at JFK Airport in New York City was evacuated at this hour on the July 4th holiday, and WABC, ABC News’s local affiliate, reports that it is a bomb scare, news that is confirmed by a government source who spoke with West Wing Report on Twitter.

While I’m seeing a lot of the typical re-tweet chatter, there’s little observable tweets from the scene. Terminal 1 is JFK’s international terminal, servicing all manner of foreign airlines.

Is this Christmas Day all over again, when Nigerian citizen Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to blow up a Detroit-bound Northwest Air flight? Or just an overreaction at the scene? We don’t know yet.

Update:

7:59 pm – AP finally chimes in, reports that there was an anonymous call along with reports of an unattended bag. The bag was fine. No repeat of the Christmas Day bombing. Happy Independence Day to one and all.

7:47 pm – The Twitter account linked to the website NewYorkology claims that an all-clear is expected, via CNN, and that an anonymous woman phoned in a bomb threat. Grains of salt – this is all via a game of social media telephone.

Stay tuned for updates…

    About Me

I'm waiting for the day when I can get the news directly into my brain. Until then, I'll be lit up by the electric glow of screens, chasing the latest breaking like the hopeless news junkie I am. Ever since the Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to launch a web portal ten years ago, I've seen many ends of the online news spectrum, from my time as a political news reporter for both RawStory.com and the Huffington Post to the better part of a year I spent running the late New York Sun's website. There have been a lot of other stops in between. Now I am your homepage editorial overlord. But I haven't let it go to my head. Yet.
