Looks like someone showed Bob Gates the Lady Gaga YouTube clip

Gosh it just doesn’t get any better than this for a late Friday news dump.

So, you might have heard/seen the spoof making the rounds of pop singer and gay heroine Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’ being performed by members of our nation’s armed services in Afghanistan. Our Neal Ungerleider wrote a really great synopsis about the context around the video at Slate, and you can also learn even more about the clip from Brett Michael Dykes at Yahoo News.

Well, apparently someone at the Pentagon showed the video to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, because now he’s leaked a letter stating that it isn’t yet time to end the ban on gay men and lesbian women serving in our nation’s Armed Forces:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is warning Congress not to tamper with the military’s ban on openly gay service members until he can come up with his own plan for repeal.

In a strongly worded letter, obtained by The Associated Press, Gates told a House committee on Friday that forcing policy changes on the military before it’s ready “would send a very damaging m

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Don’t Pursue, and Don’t Post Your Letters on the Internet the same day that members of the military did like the gayest thing possible, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

These guys make me well up with emotion. To think about the dangers they’re in and still they find time to blow off some some steam. God bless them everyone. Keep them safe. Bring them home.

    About Me

I'm waiting for the day when I can get the news directly into my brain. Until then, I'll be lit up by the electric glow of screens, chasing the latest breaking like the hopeless news junkie I am. Ever since the Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to launch a web portal ten years ago, I've seen many ends of the online news spectrum, from my time as a political news reporter for both RawStory.com and the Huffington Post to the better part of a year I spent running the late New York Sun's website. There have been a lot of other stops in between. Now I am your homepage editorial overlord. But I haven't let it go to my head. Yet.
