Sunday funnies with Karl Rove and Tom Brokaw on NBC

Karl Rove, America’s favorite cheerleader of Bush administration war crimes, was on Meet the Press today, and I couldn’t let these gems go by without offering up a quick Douglas Adams-Babelfish translation from the alien, sentient komodo dragon-like language that Karl Rove speaks fluently so the rest of you all could understand what he actually means, via Mike Allen.

First, a discussion of how the president is going about passing health care reform:

NBC’s TOM BROKAW, guest moderator of ‘Meet the Press,’ to Karl Rove: ‘The President’s health care reform plan: Is he making the same mistake that you did at the beginning of your second term when you launched social security reform before you had all the ducks in order, even in your own party, and had fully explained it to the American public?’

KARL ROVE: ‘ … The big difference is, we made an effort to build a bipartisan consensus. … So, we had done something which this administration’s not done, which is attempt to lay a bipartisan predicate for the bill. … It’s not gonna be a pared-down bill. They’re gonna pass this obnoxious Senate bill that was approved by the Senate on Christmas Eve, that is stuffed with pork.’

Translation: I, Karl Rove, screwed up. Instead of trying to get bipartisan consensus on a social security reform proposal toxic to the other side, I should have just moved President Bush to ram it through via reconciliation. I wish I had President Obama’s stones.

Next, on the Fox News-Obama White House relationship.

BROKAW: ‘Do you think that Fox News is fair to President Obama?’

ROVE: ‘I think they– on the news side, absolutely. I think that they’ve got first-rate individuals at the White House who– do their job. And in an objective, fair, and balanced way, yeah, absolutely. … NBC, for example, has MSNBC, which has opinion people … and also, you have some of those same people playing part of your news delivery at MSNBC. Which would not happen at Fox.’

Translation: Fox News spends about as much time being fair to President Obama as MTV spends actually playing music videos these days.

    About Me

I'm waiting for the day when I can get the news directly into my brain. Until then, I'll be lit up by the electric glow of screens, chasing the latest breaking like the hopeless news junkie I am. Ever since the Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to launch a web portal ten years ago, I've seen many ends of the online news spectrum, from my time as a political news reporter for both RawStory.com and the Huffington Post to the better part of a year I spent running the late New York Sun's website. There have been a lot of other stops in between. Now I am your homepage editorial overlord. But I haven't let it go to my head. Yet.
