Everyday is No Pants Subway Ride Day!
Word is spreading around the tubes that merry pranksters Improv Everywhere will do their annual ‘No Pants Subway Ride’ this weekend. But before you head out with your hipster buddies to engage in a massive act of subversive fun sans trousers, you might want to make sure you’ve got the right date for ‘No Pants Day.’
And to get that date, it depends on what you read.
Here in New York City, it all starts out with popular gossip blog Guest of a Guest. In a calendar entry, they announced that the No Pants Subway Ride would go down on Saturday, January 10.
Only problem is, it’s SUNDAY that’s January 10th – Saturday (now) is the 9th.
Apparently someone at Guest of a Guest finally figured this out, and posted another entry to read Sunday, January 10th. The problem is, some other major bloggers picked up the initial Guest of a Guest entry, and ran with it. Check out the cool kids at New York Magazine’s The Cut:
Saturday, indeed. If Amy Odell is riding the rails Saturday, you might find her asking, “Is it cold on this subway car, or is it just me?” Amy, it is just you! And anyone else who got confused by your accidentally erroneous blog entry!
Anyway, for 2011, this sounds like a great idea to prank the pranksters at Improv Everywhere. What if 5 different websites went on a campaign to announce that the No Pants Subway Ride was on 5 different dates? Hilarity would ensue on a scale far beyond the planned pants-free train trip itself.
Also brings to mind that awesome incident when the 56-year-old virgin in Texas declared her sexlessness to the education board meeting and then learned that she had missed the relevant hearing by one day.
[HT: Thank you, lovely girlfriend]

Interesting that this has become an annual event. I 1st heard about it on This American Life. The other half of the original improv (from Improv Everywhere) was that someone would show up a few stops down and start selling pants. I searched the archives and found the show (286), but they seem to have stopped providing transcripts. The group has done some other acting in real time/life things that are funny or not, depending on what side of the coin you’re on.
I think it would be a good idea not to try and sell pants on the wrong day, too.

Right, I could see it now, what color are you tighty whities….actually, I’m sure someone has tried to make this a meme already.
