The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Tiger words was injured Friday morning:

Professional golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car accident early this morning, the Florida Highway Patrol just reported.

Woods, 33, pulled out of his driveway in the Isleworth community about 2:25 a.m. when he struck a fire hydrant, and then drove into a tree at his neighbor’s property, FHP reported.

Woods was transported to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee in serious condition, FHP said. No other information about his condition has been released.

FHP said the airbags in Woods’ Cadillac Escalade did not deploy, which means the vehicle was traveling under 33 mph.

Rough year for Tiger – he hasn’t had the strongest season after recovering from knee surgery, and I hope this injury won’t slow down his career any more than recovery from the knee injury already did.

Given the details in the report about how the crash went down, I have to wonder: Was Woods being dogged by paparazzi? In the past 24 hours, the National Enquirer alleged that Woods was having an affair with a woman named Rachel Uchitel.

Hopefully that ‘under 33 mph’ means the injury isn’t too severe.

More as it emerges.

Update: 2:40 pm – Orlando’s WFTV reports the following:

It’s not clear yet what caused the crash. Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Charges are pending.

2:45 pm – WESH says Tiger is being treated for facial lacerations.

2:47 pm – Now Orlando Sentinel adds that the crash happened sometime after 2 am ET; authorities did not report the case until 2 pm, and it’s unclear if he’s still at the hospital, which would be good news for Tiger.

3:17 pm – Tiger Woods is OK, CNBC reports:

Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, told CNBC via e-mail that the golfer “is fine.”

4:13 pm – CNN is reporting that Woods is OK, and the Mayor of Windermere, FL i saying it was just an accident:

A statement from Woods’ publicist and Health Central Hospital called the accident “minor” and said Woods was “admitted, treated and released today in good condition.”

Woods, 33, had just pulled out of his driveway in his 2009 Cadillac SUV and had begun to drive down a street when he struck a fire hydrant, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The front of his vehicle then struck a tree.

Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn told CNN that local police arrived within two minutes of being notified. The golfer was taken to Health Central Hospital, where he was treated for facial lacerations and released, Bruhn said.

“I think it’s nothing more than an accident,” he said.

“I think it’s nothing more than an accident,” [the Windemere mayor] said.

Or maybe not. It may have been an extreme game of early-morning domestic goofy golf triggered by rumors of an extramarital affair with a slutty-looking party girl.

God I love the very wealthy and the very good-looking for their way of dealing with things.

    About Me

I'm waiting for the day when I can get the news directly into my brain. Until then, I'll be lit up by the electric glow of screens, chasing the latest breaking like the hopeless news junkie I am. Ever since the Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to launch a web portal ten years ago, I've seen many ends of the online news spectrum, from my time as a political news reporter for both RawStory.com and the Huffington Post to the better part of a year I spent running the late New York Sun's website. There have been a lot of other stops in between. Now I am your homepage editorial overlord. But I haven't let it go to my head. Yet.
