Doug Hoffman officially gives up in New York’s 23rd Congressional district

No word yet whether or not the Scott Reddick and Nathan Barker at the Gouverneur Times will publish a few more paragraphs speculating about ballots being stuffed in slots that don’t exist or malicious code being plugged into electronic voting machines via phantom USB keys. But here we are with Doug Hoffman finally re-conceding the election he gave up on the evening of November 4th in New York’s 23rd Congressional district, after he split the vote with Republican Dede Scozzafava and handed the Democrats both his district and the 219th health care reform vote:

“Yesterday, the remaining ballots were counted in the 23rd Congressional District special election. The results re-affirm the fact that Bill Owens won.

Since, the morning of November 4th, many of my supporters have asked me to challenge the outcome of this race. Their concerns centered on the veracity of the new voting machines used, for the first time, in the majority of the eleven counties that make up the Congressional District. Over the past three weeks, we nearly cut Bill Owens’ lead in half. Sadly, that is not enough.

“The shift in support since election night highlights one fact; the Boards of Elections, both state and county, need to work closely to ensure the seamless use of these machines in the 2010 statewide and midterm elections.

Hoffman sounds like he’s launching a humble second campaign, promising that he’ll “stay active in politics” and hopes to “personally thank all those who made this race so close and exciting.”

But if he really wants to keep it humble, I might propose that he:

1. Take down all the Andrew Breitbart fan fiction from his website that alleges that the election was stolen.

2. Remove the Gouverneur Times article that says Rep. Bill Owens is serving in Congress illegally.

3. Pull down the ‘Stop Another Stolen Election‘ hysterics written in the campaign’s name that implies ACORN, which was not involved in NY-23 in any way, shape or form, stole the election from Hoffman.

4. Refund all that money you raised while you were promising that you wanted every vote to count. Kind of insincere to keep it since you’re no longer actually doing that, right?

Unless, of course, Hoffman wants his website to look like that house at the end of of the block with Christmas lights that the lazy-ass homeowner leaves up all year, a signal of his low motivation. Meanwhile, time to start scheduling appearances on Glenn Beck this winter and spring so you can start raising money for that GOP primary!

    About Me

I'm waiting for the day when I can get the news directly into my brain. Until then, I'll be lit up by the electric glow of screens, chasing the latest breaking like the hopeless news junkie I am. Ever since the Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to launch a web portal ten years ago, I've seen many ends of the online news spectrum, from my time as a political news reporter for both RawStory.com and the Huffington Post to the better part of a year I spent running the late New York Sun's website. There have been a lot of other stops in between. Now I am your homepage editorial overlord. But I haven't let it go to my head. Yet.
