The New York Yankees are your 2009 MLB Champions

It’s so easy to hate the New York Yankees: Why are they so smug and superior? Who wears pinstripes aside from banksters these days? And do they really need to win another Series?

Hate them all you want, but they just smoked the Philadelphia Phillies at home here in New York. People will be honking their horns, fans will be pouring out another drink, and for many New Yorkers tomorrow morning, there will be some extra spring in their step in spite of the late hour (after midnight!) when the game ended.

By a score of 7-3, the Yankees, in spite of dropping two games to the Phillies, won their fourth game in 8-1/2 innings. Hideki Matsui proved to be the Yank’s dominant bat – 6 RBIs for him on the evening, and had he hit a triple, he would have hit the cycle.

Here are some photos from the game, and I’ll add more from the celebration when they become available.

Update: 12:07 am – Bud Selig and Hal Steinbrenner are both saying that this championship is for George Steinbrenner who is watching at home. A reminder that the long time Yankees owner is lucky to have lived to see his Yankees win another World Series, and that he couldn’t do it in person.

Hideki Matsui has also been awarded the World Series MVP award.

    About Me

I'm waiting for the day when I can get the news directly into my brain. Until then, I'll be lit up by the electric glow of screens, chasing the latest breaking like the hopeless news junkie I am. Ever since the Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to launch a web portal ten years ago, I've seen many ends of the online news spectrum, from my time as a political news reporter for both RawStory.com and the Huffington Post to the better part of a year I spent running the late New York Sun's website. There have been a lot of other stops in between. Now I am your homepage editorial overlord. But I haven't let it go to my head. Yet.
