Michael Vick getting paid $1.6 million to warm the bench for the Philadelphia Eagles
Vick arrived in Philadelphia Tuesday morning and remained there Wednesday evening. The Eagles will hold a news conference on Friday morning to announce his signing. The first year of the deal is for $1.6 million deal with an option for the second year at $5.2 million, FoxSports.com reports.

If you were to ask me where Michael Vick would end up after his reinstatement, I’d say it’d be a team that didn’t do well in the 2008 season and appeared to have a quarterback with a hook for a right hand.
Instead, he’s going to the Eagles, which were led by Donovan McNabb to the NFC Championship last season.
As Miley Cyrus would say, “Whaaaaaaatttttttttttt?”
Can a second stringer be redeemed? From a storyline perspective, if you want to see Vick redeemed, you have him lead a team back from obscurity. If you want shots of him scowling from the sidelines to remind everyone what a bad guy the dog fighter was, well, I suppose this is a good move, but $1.6 million is a lot of money to pay for that purpose.

Philly.com blogger Jeff McLane notes:
More than likely, Vick will be used in the ’Wildcat’ formation, as a decoy and as a runner.
$1.6 million to be a decoy!
If Michael Vick gets $1.6 million to warm Philadelphia’s bench, every banker who works for a financial institution that got a government bailout should get whatever bonus they want.

I have to disagree with you here. Coach Reid has said that he did not bring Vick on to warm the bench. The Eagles have a depth problem at QB. Their number-one backup, Kevin Kolb, just hurt his knee at camp and when the Eagles tried to promote a QB intern to backup, the NFL prevented the move.
What’s more, Vick’s addition to the roster make the Eagles the fastest offense in the NFC East. With Desean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Westbrook and now Vick, the Eagles are now essentially liquid mercury in midnight green.
Separately, two of Reid’s sons were caught up in some crazy drug and gun related legal problems a few years back. I think the coach probably has greater empathy for what Vick has been through because of this and sees that not all felons are irredeemable, no matter how heinous their crimes. Add McNabb’s close friendship with Vick (DMac was a mentor of sorts for #7 when he was in high school while #5 was at ‘Cuse) and this move isn’t as surprising as we all initially thought.
Man, I just got schooled on the Eagles all the way from Kabul. Still, I expect to see some scowling from Mr. Vick on the sidelines.
In response to another comment. See in context »He probably will need to be wearing his helmet on the sidelines for a while. Also using his crazy jukes to dodge the debris.
