Sonia Sotomayor and that warm tingly racist feeling many of you are getting in your extremities

speak_spanish_in_mexico_bumper_sticker-p128120086930705706trl0_4001Whoops! Here’s Mike Huckabee’s PAC showing us how big the GOP’s tent really is by calling Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor by her not given name: ‘Maria Sotomayor’:

The appointment of Maria Sotomayor for the Supreme Court is the clearest indication yet that President Obama’s campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bipartisan way were mere rhetoric.

via Huck comes out firing — at ‘Maria’ Sotomayor – Ben Smith – POLITICO.com.

Other popular Spanish-language female names that are *not* Judge Sotomayor’s given name, care of About.com. Republican opposition researchers, you might want to print out this list and put it next to your computer to make sure you don’t make this mistake again:

People like you are why it took two terms of the worst President ever followed by a Deep Recession before America would vote in a Democratic President. There’s nothing racist about Huckabee misspeaking. The left’s casual accusations of racism repulse most people. Why didn’t you accuse Ted Kennedy of racism when he mispronounced Sammy Sosa’s name? Clearly Ted is a rich white guy who can’t be bothered to learn a black guy’s name. I clicked on this story thinking it would be about the actual racism in play – Sotomayor’s comment that her experiences as a Hispanic woman would lead her to make better decisions than a white male. Imagine if the situation was reversed – a white male saying that his experiences as a white male mean he would probably make better decisions than a Hispanic woman. The media would justifiably beat that to death, and the white male would withdraw his nomination in shame. But Racist Sotomayor will skate. I voted for Obama, but he may be the most racist President in recent history. From sitting there for decades as Reverend Wright made his racist sermons, to his “typical white person” comment, to his nomination of this racist person to be a Supreme Court judge, it’s a good thing Obama’s and his followers’ racism is directed at those it is apparently okay to be racist towards. And what’s with the list of other Hispanic names? Do you get paid by the column inch, because it sure doesn’t contribute a thing to your “article”. Maybe you needed it to get enough words to be something other than a tweet?

Huckabee didn’t “misspeak” – his staff sent out a press release to the world and couldn’t be bothered to check up on the first name of the person he was criticizing. ‘Maria’ isn’t even Judge Sotomayor’s middle name. It takes a pretty pregnant set of lazy racial assumptions for someone to just guess that Judge Sotomayor’s first name must be ‘Maria’ – it’s not like misspelling her name.

I don’t know from Ted Kennedy and the greatest slugger ever to lead the Chicago Cubs close to a World Series, but I do know that many wrongs don’t make rights. And I also know that a lot of comfortable white people whine too often about reverse racism, but if you want to join the Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh crowd of well-paid and privileged angry white males, you are welcome. Finally:

And what’s with the list of other Hispanic names? Do you get paid by the column inch, because it sure doesn’t contribute a thing to your “article”. Maybe you needed it to get enough words to be something other than a tweet?

I just wanted to copy and re-paste that because it’s really funny.

    About Me

I'm waiting for the day when I can get the news directly into my brain. Until then, I'll be lit up by the electric glow of screens, chasing the latest breaking like the hopeless news junkie I am. Ever since the Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to launch a web portal ten years ago, I've seen many ends of the online news spectrum, from my time as a political news reporter for both RawStory.com and the Huffington Post to the better part of a year I spent running the late New York Sun's website. There have been a lot of other stops in between. Now I am your homepage editorial overlord. But I haven't let it go to my head. Yet.
