My bedbug prediction
Being a New Yorker who once contended with the specter of bedbugs, I was immediately drawn to the Daily News’s hysterical headline about “growing bloodlust” among New York’s bedbugs:
New York’s bedbug infestation is getting worse, with almost 10,000 complaints to the city last year – one-third higher than the year before.
“There are lots and lots of people who are having a devastating experience with bedbugs,” said Renee Corea, who helped start the coalition New York vs. Bed Bugs after being bitten. “We are already regarded as the most highly infested city in the United States.”
New Yorkers called 311 with 9,213 bedbug complaints in the last fiscal year, up 33.7% from the year before, according to records that Corea’s group obtained through a Freedom of Information request.
But I’m wondering if 2008-09 will turn out to be a bad winter for New York City’s creepiest crawlers. The only thing that reliably kills them is cold. And we’ve had a chilly winter here in the city – so I’m optimistic that while this report says bedbugs were up in the previous fiscal year, they’ll be down in the next one.
So stop panicking New York, and definitely stop scratching your skin, you’re making me feel itchy.
