R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

Metal icon Ronnie James Dio has died. Dio’s wife, Wendy, released the following statement Sunday morning on Blabbermouth.net:

“Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.”

Dio was best known for his role as one of Black Sabbath’s vocalists. Though I myself am  Ozzy Osbourne-era Sabbath guy, Dio’s role in the band captured the ears of many Sabbath fans. His contributions to metal’s rise in popularity remain a thing of admiration.

Dio was 67-years-old when he died. His declining health forced his new project with former Sabbath members, Heaven and Hell, to cancel their summer tour dates.
