Gang Starr’s Guru rumored to be in a coma

Since The Roots’ Questlove took to Twitter with a blog post that reported Gang Starr’s Guru is in a coma, the word has begun to spread around the Internet.

Here’s what the original post from the T.R.O.Y. blog/Philaflava said:

If anyone has info about this please let us know. We’re told his sister Tricia said he is currently in a coma after suffering from cardiac arrest. Our prayers go out to Keith Elam and his family. –Philaflava

Then a blog dedicated to DJ Premier, the second half of Gang Starr, reblogged the original short quote with a hope-filled message. Oddly enough, the DJ Premier blog post was dated March 1, which is tomorrow.

Hip Hop Wired just put a news blast on their site, basically reiterating what is already known/unknown:

According to many different sources, Hip-Hop Wired has acquired information that rapper Guru has fallen into a coma after suffering cardiac arrrest. Details right now remain very slim, but sources have stated that the news was broken by Guru’s sister.

At the moment, the details seem sketchy at best. Despite the rumors at the moment, this would be a blow to the hip-hop community. In Gang Starr, Guru helped create what is now known as old school hip-hop, a jazz-infected brand of beats covered with Guru’s signature laid-back flow and rhythm. Here’s hoping that this is all just a rumor in need of a good quelling.

UPDATE 12:12 AM: Hip Hop Wired has a new update, with information from DJ Premier himself:

DJ Premier, the other half of Gang Starr called up Satelite XM radio station “Hip Hop Nation” and confirmed Guru’s heart attack.
