The SciFi Future of Corporate Supremacy

In a world of corporate supremacy, where governments are controlled by corporations, life will be very different from the future many of us imagine.  Thanks to a recent Supreme Court ruling that allows organizations to have direct influence on politics, at least in America, our bright future will no longer be so bright, and it will not be full of the technological wonders that science fiction and our imaginations have taught us to expect.

Forget for a moment what the dire political future looks like, and instead focus on the life of both technology and the individual:  there will be no innovation, no scientific advancement, and definitely no radical changes in lifestyle.  Why?  If corporations have the government under control, and, by association, its people, there is no need to deal with such petty issues as competition or free market sales.

This means, sadly, that space exploration will come to an end, long before we have truly reached the stars, because its cost is too prohibitive for companies that can more easily manipulate planetary interests.  There will be no reformation of America into a post-post-industrial nation that has more in common with the Jetsons than it does Victorian England – why care about the environment or comfort of people if it’s all just extraneous?

The decision by the Supreme Court, if left standing, will all but devastate the sectors of technology and science, leaving most, if not all, R&D funding to dry up in favor of more lucrative pursuits, and this will have a substantial cascade effect.  Make no mistake: companies like Apple or CIENA do not produce new and innovative products out of an idealistic interest in the betterment of humanity, but instead do so with an eye on profitability and longevity.

There is likely life on other planets, but we will never know or see it unless they come to us.  The Singularity may be approaching at a murky point in the future, but it is now significantly more distant from the present, if not discounted entirely.  The progeny of Captain Picard, Starbuck, and Lieutenant General Jack O’Neill will not even exist for much longer, as science fiction itself will likely be deemed irrelevant and unprofitable, dooming the creative imaginations of countless millions worldwide.

This is a future I don’t want, and refuse to accept.  I’ve lived my whole life in the hopes that portions of what I love so dearly about science fiction will one day become real, vindicating my dreams before I die.  If this is no longer an option, my existence has just dimmed to the point of irrelevance.
