‘Molto’ Mario Batali Does Meatless Monday
Meatless Monday, the public health campaign in association with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, announced yesterday that chef, author and TV personality Mario Batali has launched a weekly meatless initiative at his restaurants. Batali spokesperson Pamela Lewy confirmed the news.
Batali joins a growing list of newsmakers — “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell, Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Sir Paul McCartney — in support of a meatless day, but he is the first celebrity chef to put his name behind the cause.
The news comes on the heels of the release of Batali’s ninth book, “Molto Gusto,” an uncharacteristically veg-heavy collection of recipes. Reports Meatless Monday editor Chris Elam on Huffington Post, Batali will offer a minimum of two meatless dishes on the menus at all 14 of his restaurants, highlighted with a Meatless Monday (MM) logo.
Could more chefs be following Batali’s orange Crocs-ed footsteps? In an interview on “60 Minutes,” chef Jose Andres described meat as “overrated” and shared his prediction that “the future is vegetables and fruits.”
I’ll share details on Batali’s MM menus as soon as they are available.
