Heavy Weather: Winter Storm in Pacific Northwest!

Haystack Rock

Image via Wikipedia

A very scary and terrible winter-style storm is headed for the Pacific Northwest. There will be snow as low as 2,500 feet! Also: wind, rain, sleet, fierce winds, and glum people moving about, their expressions invisible beneath the rain gear — all but the eyes, which will be both visible and vacant.

You might be saying, “Oh come on now for god’s sake what is it, almost Memorial Day?” But really, is it that big a deal to have a winteresque storm in mid-May?

Last week I spent a few days at Cannon Beach, on the Oregon Coast, in a battered little cabin on the shore. There was a winter storm that week, too — with 75mph gusts and violent downpours and etc. But we had sunny days, too, which is almost illegal on the Pacific Northwest coast, most of the time. And I visited some tragic seals at a low-rent Marine Aquarium in a nearby honky-tonk shore town. They clapped and fought and snarled over the bits of fish supplied to my group. It was like watching cable news with the sound off.

    Ken,

I am from Milwaukie (That is how Milwaukie is spelled in Oregon.) outside of Portland, Oregon. I love Cannon Beach and Lincoln City, both along the Oregon coast. The longest friendship I have maintained is my friend Tim who lives in Cannon Beach, but works 12 days in a row in Portland as a caregiver and has about 48 hours every two weeks after driving there and back to enjoy his condo and the wonderful beauty of the Oregon coast.

I met him when I was 18 and started sneaking into bars in Portland as the drinking age was 21. We’ve been friends for 28 years as I am now 46-years-old. Oregon is not known for its fantastic weather. It is one of the most beautiful states because of that weather. Oregon is for the hearty soul. If you sit around and wait for great weather to go do something, you would never leave home. The weather does not stop people from living their lives. I think it has rained at Cannon Beach every time I have been there.

You amaze me with your travels. I hope you are taking your kids on some of these trips. You may have been there during adverse weather in a battered little cabin, but I have a feeling you still were able to see the beauty in it. I enjoyed all the aquariums along the Oregon coast and I could have fed the seals all day long. It certainly isn’t Miami, but the Pacific Northwest has a different kind of charm and I would love getting up at daybreak and hitting the beach. It was cold and foggy and really kind of neat. You never knew what you would find along the beach as the tide started to move out. You brought back some good memories for me. Thank you.

    Sandy
