H1N1 swine flu cases, on handy Google map

Here’s the current map of Swine Flu cases in the United States and Mexico. Incomplete, sure. Expect it to get much more crowded in the days to come today — there are now cases from New Zealand to the Middle East, all over Europe and a whole lot of new cases in North America.
As of Saturday, the biggest U.S. outbreak was around Lake Henshaw, a rural reservoir in San Diego County. There’s a cluster in Imperial County, along inland California’s border with Mexico, and a growing group of cases in New York. But why so many suspected H1N1 infections in this rural area of backcountry San Diego County?

This is the first real test of Google Trends usefulness in tracking a major disease. It should be interesting to note how the public takes to this tool, and what sort of effect it will have on public perceptions of safety and/or danger.
