Working out in the UK: Now a more extreme experience

Virgin Active

In September, I blogged/whined about a new “all kids” fitness center outside of Paris, France. The gym took four months to build, and is decked out with a skateboarding zone and a ping-pong lounge. But, alas, the mecca is restricted to those 18 and under.

Now Europe has done it again – but this time, adults need not slink off to the sweaty, concrete facility down the block with their kids enjoy five-star fitness. The Virgin Active Classic Health Center in Twickenham, UK, is an all-ages experience. The facility includes a 50-foot climbing wall, a room dedicated to interactive bike rides, and, of course, a cafe with free Wi-Fi where you can eat back whatever you just burned off.

The gym opened last month, and judging from this promotional video, it’s a veritable fitness fun house. Although I don’t think every member gets to imprint their hands in concrete for display outside the center. But you never know.

But while the gym is open to all ages, there’s likely one more demographic restriction: people who aren’t freaking loaded. In the vid, ex-rugby star Will Greenwood comments that the gym will be a boon for “lazy people who don’t like to get up and do stuff.”  Right. What about people who can’t spend £150 a month on gym fees? Where’s our interactive bike riding room and three-story climbing wall?

Will Greenwood and fellow ex-rugby players who are probably, right this instant, rubbing their bodies in Euros while basking in a eucalyptus-infused steam room after their virtual reality bike ride:  I resent you.

is this a case of where the wealthy don’t live in the real world or just don’t want to e around it?

wow…I can’t imagine. I feel lucky to have a local YMCA to go to.

Interactive bike riding room? Wonder if that’s anything like the Y’s spinning room…you know, the size of a postage stamp w/15 heavy breathing sweaty people crammed in and don’t forget the guy/gal at the head of the class yelling out commands :) (I do love it though)

    About Me

I'm a full-time heath & science writer at Sphere and a contributing editor at True/Slant. I also contribute military health news to Danger Room at Wired.com, and have recently written for Marie Claire, World Politics Review and Next American City.

My first foray into journalism came in middle school - at a French-speaking plaid-kilt-wearing educational institute somewhere in the Canadian tundra. It was there that I decided to start my own newspaper, to disseminate my sarcasm and attitude problem among my peers. We lasted three issues.

From there I started to freelance, and when I became a medium-sized fish in a small Canadian lake, I decided to move to New York, and become a spore in a vast journalistic ocean. The adventure continues.

I try to parallel my personal interests with my professional work - so most of my writing has some connection to health, science and animal rights.
