Daily Dosage: Teen jobs lead to extreme sexual experiences

Let's hope he's being supervised.

Let's hope he's being supervised.

Apparently, it’s teen health week here at Extreme Self. The latest out-there update on America’s youth comes courtesy of a University of Michigan study. And it makes me wonder, very seriously, where on earth these kids are being sent to earn their spending money.

Researchers followed youth aged 14 to 25 to determine what factors contributed to their choice of sexual partner. The study confirmed my suspicions that older teen dudes go through a super pervy phase of dating 14-year-olds, and alcohol and self-esteem also played a role in teen sex pairings. But it was youth employment status that proved a big surprise:

“Working too many hours in an adult atmosphere without adequate supervision can lead to exposure to adults and eventually sexual activity with older partners, especially for young girls.”

Hold on now. What kinds of adult atmospheres and supervision are we talking about? When I was in high school, I spent five years wearing pleated khaki pants and selling honey crullers to middle-aged truck drivers. I worked 40 hours a week on top of my classes, and my manager spent most of her time crimping her hair in the back office. And trust me, I did not have sex with any of my more senior customers. Or at least not very many of them.

Maybe I’m the exception to the rule, or maybe teenagers in Michigan are involved in some rather extreme employment opportunities. I’m hoping to find out, but these researchers know how to tempt a curious audience – their study abstract is just a teaser, with a full copy available online soon. They’ve probably got a teen working overtime on copy edits. In a dimly-lit, unsupervised office, of course.

I worked as a server at a steakhouse for a year during high school. Unlike you, I can speak to adult atmospheres in the workplace. There was one late-20s manager who hit on all of the teen-aged hostesses and servers. He succeeded in hooking up with at least one of them. (Not me!)

Oh dear! I guess donut shops are just not as salacious…something about the red meat must bring out the perv.

    About Me

I'm a full-time heath & science writer at Sphere and a contributing editor at True/Slant. I also contribute military health news to Danger Room at Wired.com, and have recently written for Marie Claire, World Politics Review and Next American City.

My first foray into journalism came in middle school - at a French-speaking plaid-kilt-wearing educational institute somewhere in the Canadian tundra. It was there that I decided to start my own newspaper, to disseminate my sarcasm and attitude problem among my peers. We lasted three issues.

From there I started to freelance, and when I became a medium-sized fish in a small Canadian lake, I decided to move to New York, and become a spore in a vast journalistic ocean. The adventure continues.

I try to parallel my personal interests with my professional work - so most of my writing has some connection to health, science and animal rights.
