Daily Dosage: PETA hates your body (but loves animals, apparently)

peta-save-the-whales-obesity-billboardIf you eat meat, you probably can’t stand PETA. But – perhaps to your surprise – many a vegan, myself included, are even more disgusted by the organization and their tactics. Nothing annoys me more than activism, for issues I really care about, that warps the argument and instead promotes ideas that are downright detrimental.

Like the image above. PETA’s latest campaign is called “Save the Whales.” Of the non-human animal and Homo sapiens variety:

Anyone wishing to achieve a hot “beach bod” is reminded that studies show that vegetarians are, on average, about 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters…”Trying to hide your thunder thighs and balloon belly is no day at the beach,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman.

So, let’s skip the animal advocacy and promote distorted body image and eating disorders instead. And, while we’re at it, let’s also use the health benefits of veganism to perpetuate the idea that one should consider the lifestyle if they want to drop a few pounds and fit into smaller pants.

Studies show that teens with eating disorders are more likely to be vegetarian than their peers. And I’m willing to bet that most probably spend more time counting the calories in their Boca Burgers than studying up on animal rights.

On behalf of all the teenagers who already feel bad about their bodies this summer: thanks, PETA!

You might want to check out this blog, if you haven’t already, for an interesting perspective on the link between teenage eating disorders and vegetarianism:

When I was in high school, I did a science fair project comparing the diets of my vegetarian and omni classmates. There was one anorexic in my sample — she was vegetarian — but overall, the veg kids met their caloric and protein needs while eating more fruits and vegetables. (The omni kids tended to eat more junk food.)

    About Me

I'm a full-time heath & science writer at Sphere and a contributing editor at True/Slant. I also contribute military health news to Danger Room at Wired.com, and have recently written for Marie Claire, World Politics Review and Next American City.

My first foray into journalism came in middle school - at a French-speaking plaid-kilt-wearing educational institute somewhere in the Canadian tundra. It was there that I decided to start my own newspaper, to disseminate my sarcasm and attitude problem among my peers. We lasted three issues.

From there I started to freelance, and when I became a medium-sized fish in a small Canadian lake, I decided to move to New York, and become a spore in a vast journalistic ocean. The adventure continues.

I try to parallel my personal interests with my professional work - so most of my writing has some connection to health, science and animal rights.
