Daily Dosage: $2.5 billion for naturopathic naught
After ten years and a $2.5 billion dollar investment, the federal government has found out what millions of Americans already purport to know: alternative medicine is bunk.
Ten years ago, Congress approved the creation of the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. The organization, funded with taxpayer dollars, set out to investigate whether so-called “natural” techniques and supplements could prevent or cure illness and treat symptoms of health problems. Among the federally-funded flops:
-Using shark cartilage extract to cure cancer
-A “brain wave master” who emits cerebral rays that can break cocaine addiction
-A patented acupressure technique as an appetite suppressant to help weight loss
The government center did have some success, however. Among the triumphant research results: massage and meditation may alleviate pain, anxiety and fatigue. A study to prove that massage will reduce pain and melt away stress? Groundbreaking.
