Welcome to The Extreme Self

katie_pic_2We are obsessed with getting better. Smarter. Fitter. Kinder. Saner. As a culture, we are fixated on wellness, convinced that once we are well we will finally be satisfied. But what does it mean to be well? And how far are we willing to go to get there?

Typical western approaches to medicine, exercise, nutrition and mental health propose one option to address the problems and shortcomings of the mind and body. A cough might call for Tylenol and sadness for Zoloft. A few extra pounds means extra time on the treadmill, and a doctor’s warning means less bacon and more bok choy.

Many, however, would argue that something isn’t working. Despite the pills and procedures, we are sadder, fatter and sicker than ever. This mistrust and dissatisfaction leads to alternative pursuits of health and happiness. What many of these approaches share is the doubt they raise among skeptics and the staunch adherence of their converts. What differentiates them is what they think defines that vague notion of wellness – of harmony between body and mind.

From living forever to living on fruit, or from plastic surgery day camps to bulimic purging parties, there are a myriad of diverse approaches to health and fulfillment to explore, consider and even partake in. That’s where I come in. My interests have always tended towards the fringe, so now I’m going to blog about it…feel free to live vicariously, or, by all means, join in.

    Katie,
I’m a Western kind of medicine guy. But I’m going to follow your page very closely. I want to learn new things!

I’m fascinated by the other end of the spectrum, actually. People who take Western medicines without the ethical constructs we’ve built to restrict the use of the compounds. Melanotan. Steroids. Adderall. Nootropics. EPO. Are you going to cover those?

Hey Alexis – I’m definitely covering that. Funny you ask, I just wrote up a story on Cenegenics…a good example of steroids sans restrictions. Stay tuned.

    About Me

I'm a full-time heath & science writer at Sphere and a contributing editor at True/Slant. I also contribute military health news to Danger Room at Wired.com, and have recently written for Marie Claire, World Politics Review and Next American City.

My first foray into journalism came in middle school - at a French-speaking plaid-kilt-wearing educational institute somewhere in the Canadian tundra. It was there that I decided to start my own newspaper, to disseminate my sarcasm and attitude problem among my peers. We lasted three issues.

From there I started to freelance, and when I became a medium-sized fish in a small Canadian lake, I decided to move to New York, and become a spore in a vast journalistic ocean. The adventure continues.

I try to parallel my personal interests with my professional work - so most of my writing has some connection to health, science and animal rights.
