Gallup: Re-Elect Obama? Americans Split

In early 2011, just half a year away, we’ll be seeing the GOP presidential hopefuls start to jockey for the top spot in earnest. And they’ll be bolstered by Republican gains in the midterms, as well as the perception that the Tea Party movement can turn out the vote come 2012.

What else will bolster them?

Polls like these…

PRINCETON, NJ — U.S. registered voters remain split on whether President Obama deserves to be re-elected in 2012, with 46% saying he does and 51% saying he does not — little changed from earlier this year.

The most recent Obama re-elect measure is similar to the president’s basic job approval rating among all Americans, which was 50% in the June 11-13 USA Today/Gallup poll and 48% in Gallup Daily tracking for the same period.

Here are the numbers…

And here’s how that shakes out when looking at party affiliation…

Still, this doesn’t mean that Obama will lose the election…

However, history shows that much can change in the years prior to a presidential election. Gallup surveys in late April/early May 2002 found 69% of registered voters saying President George W. Bush deserved re-election. This was at a time when Bush’s job approval rating was 77%, reflecting the rally effect that followed the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. By October 2004, just before the election, Bush’s approval had fallen into the 50% range and his “deserves re-election” percentage had dropped to 50%. Bush ended up receiving 51% of the popular vote to John Kerry’s 48%.

Ultimately, I think 2012 will come down to the economy and whether or not Americans will trust Repubs or Dems more.

More as it develops…

I was living in Florida when Obama won. I supported his campaign locally with my dollars and showed up to rallies.

That said, will be a cold day in hell before I vote for Obama ever again!! Why you ask? Simple: There is no difference in policy between Bush/Cheney and Obama/Biden!! Any Democrat who believes otherwise is either ignorant or delusional. Let’s go through a quick list:

    1. Iraq. Not only are we STILL in Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama has opened up a new front in Pakistan. In addition, Obama has continued the Bush/Cheney tradition of using mercenaries and covert torture operations.

    2. Wall St. Bailout. Let’s not forget that the trillion dollar “bailout” was originally designed by Bush and Paulson. Obama (being the dutiful errand boy of Wall St.) did a great job of selling it to us and selling us out. Instead of the gift of free tax-payer money, Wall St. should have put into federal bankruptcy and the trillion dollars in TARP money should have been used for building schools, hospitals, infrastructure, water systems, advanced energy research, etc.

    3. Health care. The so-called health care bill is nothing more than a transparent reinforcement of neo-fascist corporate insurance system which places corporate profits over human life. Yet another Obama gift to corporate fascists.

    4. BP Oil. This is truly Obama’s Katrina. Actually much worse. If I wanted a completely impotent response to such a disaster I would have re-elected Bush and “Brownie”. For Obama to take to the position of ‘hey, it’s up to BP to do something, the federal government is just a bystander’ is criminal and worthy of impeachment.

I will NEVER vote for Obama again or lift a finger of support. Let Glen Beck and Bill O’Reilly tear him to pieces. They can have him.

    With much hate,
    Mathew

I didn’t vote for him, and I think we can all see he just said anything to get in there- I hoped for changes when he got in, I did not begrudge him at all, and it is the second worst time to be President (W was the worst time) but I stand with Mathew, he is a big nothing at a time when we need the best and brightest.

There’s no question that we should re-elect Obama. I can’t even imagine someone who would be better tested than President Obama. Are you paying attention? Can you think of someone other than him who has been through more crashes, disasters, collapses than this man, other than Roosevelt and he got to run for 4 terms. It’s going to take awhile to get out of the mess we are in. Yeah, I wish we had single payer health care – we’ll get there. I wish Gitmo was shut down, that we were closer to being out of Iraq and Afghanistan. But did anyone predict the Party of No and that Dems would blow their own control of the Congress by not voting for the people, for jobs, health care, banking regulation, oil spills?

There is no one more tested than he.

Your argument that we should elect Obama because he’s been tested makes no sense. By that logic, you should be seeking the return of Bush/Cheney (weren’t they “tested” by 9/11 and Katrina?).

Obama’s failure isn’t because he doesn’t know how to respond. His failure is because he (like his Republican predecessors) fundamentally values corporate and Wall St. interests over public, civic and human needs. To think otherwise is simply disengaged from reality. In his unmatched narcissism, he sees himself as part of the Wall St. (“masters of the universe”) crowd not realizing that they only see him as a marginally useful tool. He’s an arrogant, narcissistic fool. People like me supported his campaign expecting FDR. Instead, he gave us Bush’s third term.

    Mr. Gardener,

The old saying goes, “You can’t beat something with nothing”. Who or what do the Republicans have to beat Mr. Obama? They have no platform or program other than “NO” and “Cut taxes and slash government services”, that same old stuff that they have been selling for 30 years. I just don’t see Palin-Huckabee or Paul-Angel beating Obama-Biden.
