Fake BP Twitter Account Attracts More Than The Real One
It’s called BPGlobalPR and it has 22K followers. The BP_America twitter account only has about 5K as of right now.
Obviously they have bigger things to worry about right now, but one would imagine they’d like to shut something like this down. And the one problem this account might run into is the fact that they’re using BP’s brand, and that’s a no-no on Twitter and would give BP a very easy excuse to get it removed.
Of course, this could easily be considered satire. Should Twitter shut it down if it’s within the limits of Fair Use?
Here’s a bit about when something can be used and protected under Fair Use:
The copyright law contemplates that fair use of a copyrighted work without permission shall be for purposes such as (1) criticism and comment, (2) parody and satire, (3) scholarship and research, (4) news reporting and (5) teaching, and that such fair use will not result in the infringement of a copyrighted work.
And here are some of the tweets…pretty funny…
- The ocean looks just a bit slimmer today. Dressing it in black really did the trick! #bpcares
- I’m sorry, are people mad at us for drilling in the ocean?!? Maybe God shouldn’t have put oil there in the first place. DUH. #bpcares
- Proud to announce that BP will be sponsoring the New Orleans Blues Festival this summer w/ special tribute to Muddy Waters. #bpcares
When it rains…it pours. Or when it spills…it gushes.
Either is appropriate I suppose.
