Gallup: Indies Breaking Big For 2010 Repubs
Gallup is out with a poll that suggests more problems for the Dems and a 10 point shift in voter preference since July.
First, the numbers…

The bigger news here? Independents are swinging wildly in favor of the generic Republicans.

There’s about a year to go before the 2010 elections, but this shift does not bode well for Dems. I still don’t think that Repubs can regain any majorities, but if we start seeing more Independents breaking right, it could be a very bad night for the donkeys.
Here’s the question: If Independents keep breaking big for Repubs, how can Dems win them back?

What a choice. Incompetent democrats who forgot what party is supposed to stand for and fear mongering corporate bought republicans who see nothing wrong with doing nothing.
Hello Justin,
The problem here, aside from the time issue I have commented on before, this is “generic” Republican vs. a “generic” Democrat. There are no generic candidates, there are only real candidates. The question is will an specific incumbent Democrat be beaten by a specific Republican challenger in a specific district or state. This pole indicates that the general public is fed up with a generic congress but it does not mean that specific voters are going vote against their own incumbent member of congress. If job loses and home foreclosures continue, I really doubt vast numbers of people are going to rally to the Republican standard. These are the folks who are voting against extending unemployment insurance. As I have said before, you cannot beat something with nothing. What would a Republican challenger run on as a platform that would woo voters who are not “blue cat” Republicans? Balanced budget and tax cuts? They still got nothing.
[...] And sure, some of this is political, but it’s still a refreshingly logical decision and goes completely against the “socialist” meme that Obama’s critics are trying to smear him with. It makes even more sense when you consider that Independent voters are starting to grow weary of the Congressional Dems. [...]
