Quote Of The Day – Whacko For Jacko

Turned on the TV to see Geraldo interviewing Tommy Mottola about Michael Jackson’s death. In the background, footage of the body being delivered to the coroner’s office by helicopter. Glad to see Fox is keeping us up on what’s really important, the night before a big cap-and-trade vote in Congress, while revolution simmers in Iran, and people are trying to nationalize healthcare.

- Glenn Reynolds lamenting the media’s constantly shifting attention

Now, first off, cap and trade was never going to inflame the passions of voters as much as it inflamed the right-wing blogosphere. So Reynolds is coming from a pretty specific perspective.

And as far as nationalized health care goes, well, the jury’s definitely still out on that one. Also, single payer isn’t on the table, and that’s the only truly nationalized health care system. Anything else is government subsidized, but not government run. Big difference there.

So turning to Jackon, let’s remember how rich of a source he was for news about his inexplicable and disturbing behavior. Nobody was as rich and crazy as MJ. Nobody. So it’s understandable that the media wants to gorge one more time before the faucet is turned off forever.

Also, the world is hungry for news about one of the most famous people to ever live. And the following point shouldn’t be overlooked…Michael Jackson was more well known than nearly any other figure in history besides, well, Jesus Christ.

So yes, the focus is taken off Iran and Sanford and some legislation…for about a couple days. Tomorrow they’ll be starting to shift back.

Here’s the question: What should the media be covering today?
