Strangers In My Neighborhood, Pt. 1
At the end of my block, and just beyond, stand a number of figures positioned at the edge of tall buildings. This, as you might imagine, is causing a bit of a stir among passersby.
In fact, during my four years in New York City, I have witnessed few sights that have provoked as much on-the-street staring, pointing and gasping as Event Horizon.
The public art exhibit, installed in and around Manhattan’s Madison Square Park, features nearly three dozen life-size body figures composed of iron and fiberglass. Some of these figures stand motionless on ground level, while others appear to stare down at you from atop the neighborhood’s historic buildings.
The installation, which doesn’t officially open until Friday, is the work of artist Antony Gormley. Over the next three days, I will offer my impressions of what it’s like to experience Gormley’s piece.
For more information on the exhibit, see the Event Horizon Web site.
