6 great resources for diversity on Twitter

Twitter has so many users that it can be hard to find and keep up with people whose interests dovetail with your own. If you’re interested in diversity-related topics, the following six people/accounts on Twitter are great resources for the latest news and information:

1. @EPetersonSHRM. Eric Peterson is the Manager, Diversity and Inclusion for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and a frequent updater on Twitter. Peterson’s updates are a fascinating mix of everything from diversity in politics and sports to SHRM’s latest diversity research. His #FollowFriday lists (on which I am occasionally featured) are excellent guides to other diversity professionals on Twitter.

2. @diversity_woman. Diversity Woman is a magazine for professional women and entrepreneurs. Their Twitter updates provide the latest content from their website (diversitywoman.com), including articles on climbing the corporate ladder, making good hiring decisions, the importance of mentoring, and similar topics. They also provide useful links to webinars and other events.

3. @RspectfulWkplce. The Twitter account for Respectfulworkplace.com is a joint project of the Edge Learning Institute of Ohio and Edge Learning Institute. Their updates provide interesting links to articles about understanding, respecting and celebrating differences in the workplace. Frequent topics include empathy, diversity, and handling conflict at work, as well as other current news in the diversity field.

4. @newdemographic. New Demographic helps organizations to engage in productive and authentic conversations about race and diversity. Carmen Van Kerckhove, the company’s CEO, sends out frequent updates on diversity-related issues in the news and infuses it with her own brand of personality and humor. It’s a fun way to learn more about diverse issues in society.

5. @BlendImages. If you’re looking for stock photos that include multiethnic people and groups, Blendimages.com is a great place to find photos that represent a wide range of people groups. Their Twitter account provides links to staff-selected photos, as well as links about diversity in advertising and multicultural marketing.

6. @CatalystInc. As you might expect, the Twitter account for Catalyst, the highly regarded organization for the advancement of women in business, provides a broad range of information about issues impacting women in the workplace. They also provide current news, as well as the latest updates on their research. A great follow for those wanting more information, whether statistical or anecdotal, on women in the workplace—including women of color.

    About Me

I left my career as a corporate lawyer to author Double Outsiders (JIST Works, 2007), an award-winning book about the lives and experiences of professional women of color. Since then, I've continued writing as a freelancer and columnist and have been cited in the Associated Press, Working Mother, and the National Law Journal, among others. In Hyphenated, I'll continue writing about women of color, but will also expand my focus to look at issues impacting women and people of color generally in society. You can find me on a bunch of different social networks, but most often on Twitter (@jescarter).
