First Black woman crowned as Miss England
Twenty year old Rachel Christie, a London native, has been crowned as Miss England. This would normally be somewhat unremarkable (since pageants happen annually), except for the fact that Ms. Christie is Black, and England has never crowned a Black woman to represent the nation before. To be fair, they have crowned other women of color.
I am not a big fan of beauty pageants (read: sexist), but it is nice to see Black beauty celebrated, since it happens relatively rarely. I’m also sort of giving the whole pageant situ a pass because Ms. Christie is in the midst of preparations for the 2012 Olympics in London, in the 400m and heptathlon. At this rate, she might win those, too.

Please, Lord, don’t let this young woman become Simon Cowell’s new arm candy.
