Cheers! To cheaper champagne tasting better
This is good news. Eric Asimov writes in the New York Times, “If you can afford to spend $30 to $40 a bottle on Champagne, more or less the entry-level price nowadays, you may find yourself with some seriously good wine.”
We can thank the recession for this bit of bubbly.
“I think a lot of the importers got very nervous and this fall lowered prices for the big houses, especially in November and December,” said Lorena Ascencios, the wine buyer for Astor Wines and Spirits in Greenwich Village, which has a superb selection of Champagne.
Well, yay for us. But if that $30 entry is still too rich for your blood, keep a cork in it. There’s a world of cheap options for your boozing needs. And then there’s bathtub gin.
