10 celebs not worth their weight in gold

Cover of "Elf [Blu-ray]"

Using a complex ratio calculation of meager box office returns and massive salaries, Forbes has given us a treat: the most overpaid Hollywood star of the last five years is…dah dah dah…

Willllll Ferrell!

Forbes said Mr. Ferrell’s films earned an average of $3.29 for every dollar he was paid. Successes like “Elf” and “Talladega Nights” raised Mr. Ferrell’s compensation in the last few years, but high-budget flops like “Land of the Lost” (which earned back only $65 million of an estimated $100 million budget) have lowered the value of this former “Saturday Night Live” star.

Also on the “bottom 10″ list: Ewan McGregor, Billy Bob Thornton, Eddie Murphy, Ice Cube, Tom Cruise, Drew Barrymore, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jim Carrey.

Shia LaBeouf, however, who is currently filming Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps (ahem!), landed atop the company’s list of “best actors for the buck,” earning $160 at the box office for every dollar he was paid.

Also good recession bets? Robert Downey Jr., Michael Cera, and Christian Bale. No mention (yet) of everybody’s favorite bloodsucker.

  1. collapse expand

Surprised Nick Cage isn’t on the list. (With his recent financial problems, I bet he wishes he was on it.)

Never understood the popularity of Ferrell going back to his SNL days. Speaking of SNL; much better indie actor was hosting last week -Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I much rather watch any of his movies.

    About Me

Once upon a time I was the managing editor at an irreverent and scrappy magazine called Radar. My claim to fame there included quenching a near deadly wastebasket fire, always ordering enough pizzas for the whole team, and making sure the copy was clean and sparkling.

Before that, I got around as a freelancer, working for such varied companies as Reader's Digest, Rodale, McKinsey & Company, and US News & World Report, in roles that included writing, editing, researching, and "making the trains run on time."

When Radar folded at the end of October 2008, I found myself at OK! magazine, a tabloid weekly famous for spending a lot of money on Jamie Lynn Spears' baby photos and having the greatest staff turnover since the Titanic. (I became a casualty of the May '09 round of layoffs, but lived to blog about the tale.)

I'm now back in the freelance arena, plying my trade—and 10 years of experience—to the highest (or lowest. Or any) bidder, making do with a little less day-by-day, and wondering how this great publishing apocalypse is going to shake out in the end.

    My bet is on content.
