The personal part is voluntarily reducing affluence. One can easily and significantly do that today. The technological part pretty much goes on all by itself, mindful of new opportunities to make a profit. The political part is agreeing to create markets for better technologies.

But if we’re not going to use government to change the types of energy we depend upon, we will instead need hundreds of millions of people to take these steps. I think most will be inclined to wait until the effects of global warming are dramatic in their personal lives. In other words, to wait until it’s too late.

I don’t think we have to wait for green entrepreneurs. You can easily cut your carbon footprint in half TODAY by
1) carpooling, especially in a Prius, e-biking, especially bike/busing,
2) by going vegan or near vegan.
3) by using fans not a/c in summer and one room/not whole house heating/cooling.
The vanguard is personal responsibility, not technology, not politicians.

I admire your turn, Scott, from pessimism about politicians to optimism about the people. but I worry about the weeds among the grassroots — so many armchair warming deniers emitting carbon dioxide pollution in the form of irrelevant debates, political white noise, when the time has come–and maybe even is past–for us, as much as possible as a species, to act.

The longer I read about this kind of stuff — the politicians jockeying all around the subject of climate change and new energy — the more I think that real change will come from regular people who are the green entrepreneurs. They will have the workable ideas and take the necessary risks to give us new forms of energy and the delivery and renewal systems that will go along with that. They will be the vanguard, not the politicians.
