First blackface, now midget racing: This is why I love Australians

I just can’t get enough of Australians and their comedic blunders. Last week, a comedy troupe famously spoofed the Jackson 5 wearing blackface –  and it was awesome, in that train wreck way. This week, it’s the Midget Cup, staged by horse racing officials to promote an upcoming state carnival. Check it out:

Just look at those little guys whipping their “horses.” Awesome. Totally awesome.

Naturally, the stunt’s organizers have been denounced by advocacy groups. In defense, Racing Victoria’s marketing manager, Stuart Laing, described the race as “harmless fun.” He did apologize, if a bit casually: “We understand that you can’t please everyone and if anyone’s offended by the events of Sunday then we apologise to them,” he said.

What’s next, Australia? Some good old-fashioned Hitler jokes? I can’t wait.

About Me

I'm the former editor-in-chief of New York Press, senior editor of Forbes Traveler, associate editor of The Prague Pill (R.I.P.). Everything started with an angry little zine called Crank, 1994-2000. I founded 100 Words in 2001; it's still running strong at 100words.com with several million published words. I've spent a lot of time in a lot of places, including Prague, Bangkok and countless hotels of varying quality. One year, I slept in 120 different beds.

I've written for the New York Times, New York magazine, Forbes Insights, Radar, Good, Wired, the New York Post, The Guardian, Men's Journal, Penthouse, Maxim UK, Fortean Times and some others. I've sold an as yet unproduced screenplay to some folks in the U.K., and I've got another about to make the rounds.

Most of my work is at www.fineorsuperfine.com
