Big tourism in little China: 120 dwarfs start their own theme park

Big tourism in little China. (Europics)

Big smiles, everyone, big smiles! (Europics)

Though my bullshit sensor is clanging louder than the dinner bell at a fat camp, I can’t resist reporting this one. Tired of being bullied by the full-sized world, a group of 120 dwarfs have set up their own little village in southern China. This being the 21st century, they’ve naturally invited tourists to pay them a visit. From the Sun:

A DWARF community who set up their own village after suffering discrimination from “big people” have turned themselves into a tourist attraction.

People taller than 4ft 3ins tall were banned from entering the private mountain commune of 120 residents, which has its own police force and fire brigade.

But now the group have branched out — and turned their village into a theme park by building mushroom houses and living and dressing like fairy tale characters.

Fu Tien, a spokesman for the tiny group in Kunming, southern China, said: “As small people we are used to being pushed around and exploited by big people. But here there aren’t any big people and everything we do is for us.”

Unfortunately, there’s no real way to confirm this wonderful wee story. The Sun credits a “staff reporter,” which is a crap way of saying “We took the story from someone else.” In this case, from the Austrian Times. Which makes sense: The photo comes from Austria’s Europics photo agency, but non-members can only see the thumbnail.

But hey, who knows — there are already several attractions in the area, not least being the Yunnanese Cultural Park where “everyday lives of ethnic minorities in Yunnan province are detailed.” The Chinese are weird cats. I wouldn’t put it past them to classify dwarfs as an ethnic minority.

Heading to the area? Please send some pix.

About Me

I'm the former editor-in-chief of New York Press, senior editor of Forbes Traveler, associate editor of The Prague Pill (R.I.P.). Everything started with an angry little zine called Crank, 1994-2000. I founded 100 Words in 2001; it's still running strong at 100words.com with several million published words. I've spent a lot of time in a lot of places, including Prague, Bangkok and countless hotels of varying quality. One year, I slept in 120 different beds.

I've written for the New York Times, New York magazine, Forbes Insights, Radar, Good, Wired, the New York Post, The Guardian, Men's Journal, Penthouse, Maxim UK, Fortean Times and some others. I've sold an as yet unproduced screenplay to some folks in the U.K., and I've got another about to make the rounds.
