In-flight magazine won’t pay for articles, so to speak

If you’ve ever wondered why in-flight magazines aren’t usually worth reading, let this email exchange shed some light on the industry.

Dear Mr. Koyen,
Good day!
I am a researcher for Eastgate Publishing in the Philippines. We publish Mabuhay, Philippine Airlines’ inflight magazine, and are coming out with a new quarterly travel magazine called Mango later this year. We loved your feature on travel taboos and would like to know if it would be possible to reprint this in Mango.
Thank you very much.

Dear Mr. Koyen,
That sounds great; we are very interested. Would you be amenable to our rate of US$0.15/word? With regards to copyright, we only purchase non-exclusive rights for articles and photos.
Please let me know of any questions or concerns.
Many thanks!

Dear Mr. Koyen,
My sincerest apologies, but I failed to mention that the words “a”, “and”, and “the” are not included in the rate. Would you still be interested in writing this piece for us?

If the emails hadn’t come from Eastgate’s domain name, I would’ve assumed it was a joke.

That’s awesome. My favorite recent story is that Sky Magazine is now going to be sold on newsstands. Because people are dying to pay for something they didn’t read when it was free?

About Me

I'm the former editor-in-chief of New York Press, senior editor of Forbes Traveler, associate editor of The Prague Pill (R.I.P.). Everything started with an angry little zine called Crank, 1994-2000. I founded 100 Words in 2001; it's still running strong at 100words.com with several million published words. I've spent a lot of time in a lot of places, including Prague, Bangkok and countless hotels of varying quality. One year, I slept in 120 different beds.

I've written for the New York Times, New York magazine, Forbes Insights, Radar, Good, Wired, the New York Post, The Guardian, Men's Journal, Penthouse, Maxim UK, Fortean Times and some others. I've sold an as yet unproduced screenplay to some folks in the U.K., and I've got another about to make the rounds.

Most of my work is at www.fineorsuperfine.com
