Cop Tasers 14-yr-old Epileptic in the Head

Another Taser story for the collection, this time courtesy of Tucumcari New Mexico. The mother took the daughter herself to the police station so she could learn from police about the dangers of sending older men SMS images. The situation took a wild turn when the daughter bolted from the police station, Chief Roger Hatcher pursued the teenager into a nearby park, where he tasered her in head. She didn’t even commit a crime.

Watch the video below to hear from the girl give her story.

Epileptic or not, she should have stopped when the officer warned her. I would have stopped. You would have stopped. Most people stop. If you don’t stop, you get zapped. That is how it works.

@briano Actually, I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works. Cops aren’t supposed to tase 14-year-old girls just because they don’t feel like running after them. Getting hit with a taser is painful and it’s not a tool for police to use on a whim. Don’t stop, get zapped? Surely some officers use tasers a little more judiciously.

At @briano, I also think an important point in the story is how the girl did not commit any crime, her mother brought her to the station so the police could teach her daughter a lesson, not get tased in the head… although some could argue…

Not sure about that. The story did report that she had physically abused her mother previously. Were they dealing with an innocent little 14-year-old? Maybe she should have just listened to the officer when he told her to stop. I am not advocating police brutality, I’m only saying that law enforcement reserves the right to use force when people do not cooperate. Maybe that taught her a lesson.

We don’t know exactly how it went down, so lets not convict the guy. I guess we just let the investigation run its course and see what happens. Truth is, I will probably never follow up on this story in order to find out what happens! Haha!

There is a difference between a full-grown, adult, male criminal, and a still developing, female, non-criminal teenager. There is probably something less extreme that could have been done, besides jolt this poor girl will a lot of electricity. Perhaps slightly justified, but out of proportion. She walked out of a talk, not ran from a drug deal.

As someone has said, we are not privy to “all” of the circumstances surrounding this particular incident.

As well, we must presume she was not some “sweet”, “innocent” little waif or her mom would not have brought her to the PD to have them talk to her. It’s been my experience this is mostly an action of last resort by a parent to correct some type of serious behavior. For crying out loud folks, she’d been sending images to older men at age 14. Does this strike you as innocent behavior? You can bet this was not her “only indiscretion” either. Therefore, neither the mom nor the cop was dealing with some little Pollyanna here. Sometimes, an officer must choose between the lesser of two evils to take control of a situation. It appears that’s what was done here.

Maybe an up close and personal experience with a paddle would have been more acceptable. Excuse me; I forgot we can’t take a chance of damaging their delicate little psyches can we. They by golly may very well grow up with their psyches intact, but they also may very well grow up with absolutely no common sense or sense of right and wrong. Which would you rather have??

    About Me

I was born and raised in Peterborough Ontario, from there I've moved to London, Banff, Victoria and finally Qualicum Beach - I am confident I have found the best place in Canada to settle. I don't consider myself a writer, I only play one on the Internet - I started blogging years ago for my now-defunct website ThrowawayyourTV.com - Since then I've blogged for AOL and worked as a manager/trainer at Mahalo.com assisting writers in learning the ropes of Internet Research and web-writing. Away from the computer I work as a pay-on-call Firefighter here in town.
