Sex Party, UK-Style: “Eyes Wide Shut” Live!

According to an article in The Observer, the Great Recession hasn’t dampened the appetites of upscale swingers, who had, by the sounds of it, a party straight out of Stanley Kubrick’s film Eyes Wide Shut at a stately, 17th-century home near Bristol last weekend.

Three hundred guests were invited to the masked ball at Halswell House. “At midnight we had a ceremony with a priest and topless dancing girls, and the masks were taken off,” said Mike Voorvaart, the 40-year-old organiser of the event. “Suddenly the spell was broken and people were so excited they really went for it. I’m not easily shocked, but you British really know how to get a party started. After last Saturday I don’t think you can say the British are a bit puritan at all.”

However, the owner of the 17-bedroom stately home, Grahame Bond, was less enthusiastic, complaining that couples were “having sex over the banisters and beneath the chandeliers”. Voorvaart said there were strict rules forbidding guests from having sex in front of others (they are told to retire to more discreet locations), but admits: “It was not possible to stop them.”

Voorvaart is planning to hold his next party in September in a fortress on an island off the south coast. He says he is also looking to hold a party in a cave, but hasn’t found one which is suitable which is also located near an airport and a major city–“prerequisites for its jet-set following.”

A ticket to the event is £65; the website of Voorvaart’s company, Little Sins, has reportedly been innundated with requests for tickets.
